Non Big 5 Bush Walk

Timbavati Safari Lodge bush walk is not about the big 5, but looking out for the small 5, known as the ant lion, elephant shrew, leopard tortoise, buffalo weaver and rhino beetle. There are a huge variety of bugs/insects and reptiles that can be seen, and it does not stop there. The bush is filled with many legends and historical stories, medicinal and traditional uses of the plants that are often only known about through the expert knowledge of local guides.

Listening, touching and sensing, can open your world to the real secrets of the African Lowveld.

Our area is an interesting niche eco system with a large variety of tree species. This allows for smaller wild game, prolific bird life and many smaller inhabitants of the bush. Although the bush walk is focused on the Flora and fauna of the lowveld do not forget about the opportunities of not only spotting zebra, kudu, blue-wildebeest, impala, grey-duiker, bushbuck, warthog, and mongoose but also tracking the events of the previous night’s nocturnal animals such as Porcupine, Civet, Honey Badger, Genets and Bush Babies

Bird life is seasonal but some common special spots are Helmeted Guinea Fowl, Purple-crested turaco, Grey go-away bird, Levaillant’s cuckoo, African emerald cuckoo, wood owl, scops owl (both Southern white-faced and African), woodland kingfisher, African pygmy-kingfisher, black cuckoo shrike, flycatchers, and many more.
